CM2007 Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Hi all, my 2.8 V6 has an oil leak. It's quite a bad one as I spotted a puddle on the drive and checked the oil, it was only just touching the very tip of the dipstick! not good!I won't have a chance to look at it till next weekend but I just wondered if there was a common place where these would leak?I can't see anything when looking from the top but peeking in a tiny gap at the front of the engine cover, I think I can see a wet area around the lower front somewhere. It appears to be higher up than the sump so I don't think it's the sump gasket. Any ideas so I at least know what to look for when I get her up on the ramp next week? CheersMike Quote
Mary Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Hi there My Sharan was leaking badly and it was the oil filter housing seal also the breather pipe was a bit cracked so did it at same time. Cured it though  Mary Quote
CM2007 Posted April 12, 2008 Author Report Posted April 12, 2008 Hi Mary, thanks for the reply. When I was sorting a gearbox leak a couple of months back, I did notice a small leak coming from around this area so I think perhaps you are correct. I imagine it's just a rubber gasket seal and as long as I can get to it easy enough it should be a breeze. CheersMike P.S. Nice dog in the pic, is it a GSD? I have two myself and they are great fun, also, is your sierra the mk1 cosworth? I bet it's worth a mint! it's nice to see a few of the classics still about. Quote
mk2vr6 Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 could also be the sensors on the oil cooler/filter block? the seals on these shrink with age and weep like crazy! cheaper and an easier option to start with! best to clean off the oil and see where it's coming from before you pull the filter housing off  Quote
sepulchrave Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 Mine was leaking from around the Crank Positon Sensor, a new O Ring cured it. It's surprising how much oil it loses over time from even a small leak, it was hard to diagnose since it would only leak when the engine was warmed up and running. Quote
simon Posted August 24, 2008 Report Posted August 24, 2008 Hi, Hope you can help? I have an oil leak on my 1996 2.8 V6. I've had a good look underneath and think I have found the source.. looking directly under the car with my head facing toward the front of the sump , it is on the left, it is silver in colour, diamond in shape and has appears to have a remonvable cap to the front, it appears to be coming from the rear of this - However I havent a clue what I am looking at! looking in my Haynes manual there appears to be no pictures of the 2.8 V6 engine, does anybody know what I am looking at? Cheers Si Quote
